How to Fix a Toilet That Is Running?

    • 1). Turn off water to the toilet at the valve behind the bowl, near the floor. Twist the knob completely clockwise to close.

    • 2). Flush the toilet. Lift the lid off the tank and gently set it aside as porcelain lids will shatter if they hit the floor.

    • 3). Remove the old flapper from the two pins at the bottom of the tank and unclip the metal chain connecting it to the steel or plastic rod near the top of the tank interior.

    • 4). Place the old flapper in a small bag to keep your fingers clean and take the part to a plumbing shop, home improvement center or hardware store for a replacement.

    • 5). Set the new flapper in the hole inside the water tank and snap it onto the two posts at the bottom. Hook up the chain dangling from the steel or plastic rod to the loop in the center of the flapper.

    • 6). Set the lid gently on top of the tank to prevent chipping and slide it into position.

    • 7). Twist the water valve below the toilet counterclockwise to fill the tank.
