Seven Reasons For Practicing Worm Composting

Vermicomposting is increasing in popularity, and many worm composting products are showing up in many home and garden centers.
Many of these products are expensive, but you can easily and inexpensively create your own.
If you have not yet considered setting up your own worm bin, you might want to consider the following points:
  • Worm composting is the environmentally friendly way to recycle kitchen, garden, and other organic wastes.
Instead of disposing of these wastes in your local landfill or sewer, consider allowing compost worms to make the best plant food imaginable from your scraps.
Each day vermicomposting worms can eat approximately one half their weight in food.
A few thousand worms can convert your wastes into a few pounds of wonderful plant food weekly!
  • This practice produces more micro organisms than conventional composting practices.
The resulting micro organisms provide many benefits for your plants.
  • The process of vermicomposting locks nutrients and moisture into the resulting compost (and soil).
This makes nutrients and plant foods more bio-available, and helps in the retention of water for delivery to plants as they need it.
  • The finished product of vermicomposting generally produces a finer product as compared to the coarser products produced by other composting practices.
  • Resulting compost application helps to repel harmful insects and other pathogens, which results in more disease resistance and less plant damage and infection.
For example, the micro organisms from the worm composting process produce chitanase which can function as an insect repellent when worm tea is used as a foliar application.
  • Worm castings provide various plant growth and seed germinating hormones - such as 'auxin.

  • Setting up a worm bin is inexpensive, and a great way to get kids involved in learning about science and nature, and teaching conservation.
Most kids find worm composting to be very rewarding and great fun!
