Ariana Kukors Sets Pool Record on First Night - 2010 Austin Grand Prix Swim Meet

Ariana Kukors set a pool record Thursday on the first day of competition at the 2010 Austin Grand Prix Swim Meet. Kukors broke Tracy Caulkins' pool record in the 200m IM with a time of 2:10.34. The Austin Grand Prix Swim Meet, taking place at the University of Texas at Austin, runs through Saturday, March 6.
Whitney Myers finished second in the 200m IM with a time of 2:13.89. Justine Mueller was third in 2:15.83.

Robert Margalis had a strong swim in the men's 200m IM, finishing with a time of 2:03.06. Swim Ontario's Andrew Ford placed second in 2:05.72 and SwimMAC's Jay Cormier was third in 2:05.92.

Chloe Sutton (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Katie Hoff (Towson, Md.) battled it out for the top spot in the women's 400m free. Sutton, who is the current USA Swimming Grand Prix Series points leader, hit the wall first with a time of 4:07.41. Hoff finished in 4:10.57 and Lauren Driscoll (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was third in 4:13.66. On the men's side, two-time Olympian Peter Vanderkaay won the men's 400m free with a time of 3:50.86. Michael Klueh (Evansville, Ind.) was second in 3:53.15 and Sean Ryan (Hixson, Tenn.) was third in 3:56.60.

The women's 100m fly saw a strong race between a field that included Olympic silver medalist Christine Magnuson (Tinley Park, Ill.), American record-holder Dana Vollmer (Granbury, Texas), and two-time Olympian Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.), back in competition for the first time since the 2008 Olympics.

Vollmer won the event with a time of 58.42. Magnuson was a close second in 58.54 and Coughlin placed third in 58.94.

Japan's Masayuki Kishida took the top spot in the men's 100m fly with a time of 53.30. David Russell (Wellesley, Mass.) was second in 53.83 and Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.) was third in 53.97.

Jessica Hardy (Long Beach, Calif.) won the women's 50m free with a time of 25.09. Hardy faced a strong field which included Olympians Amanda Weir (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Magnuson and Kara Lynn Joyce (Ann Arbor, Mich.). Weir finished second in 25.18 while Madison Kennedy (Walnut Creek, Calif.) finished third in 25.35.

The men's 50m free was won by 2008 Olympic gold medalist Cesar Cielo of Brazil. Cielo finished in 22.13 and was followed by Garrett Weber-Gale (Milwaukee, Wis.), who finished in 22.24. Grevers added his second bronze medal of the night with a time of 22.77.

The 2010 Austin Grand Prix Swim Meet continues Friday with five events. Finals competition will include the 400m IM, 100m breast, 100m back, 200m free, 200m free and 200m medley relay.

In Austin, preliminary heats are in the 25-yard pool (short course), finals in the 50-meter pool (long course) at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas.
