Create A Tropical Paradise
Create a Tropical Paradise by David Squire
One of the hardest times we must face is the cold winter months that usually keep us inside for most of our spare time. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of fun activities to do when it's cold.
You can go skiing or take up a hockey game or maybe build a snowman. Better yet, you can hop on a snowmobile and take a joyride. Okay, so maybe you're like me and are not that adventurous.
The one thing that I can't stop thinking about is the warmth that the sun provides. That feeling of ultimate relaxation and rejuvenation that a spring Sunday afternoon will bring. The going for a walk and enjoying the fresh smells in the air, the birds singing, and all green leaves on the trees with the flowers blooming. I can see the butterflies fluttering around with the blue sky in the background.
But now all I see is snow, gray skies, and bare trees. So I decided to help myself feel better and continually remind myself of the better days of spring and summer. I wanted to trick my mind into believing I was in a different place, a warmer climate, without ever leaving the house.
It started out small. I took some tropical plants, mostly fake, and put them in my most used rooms in the house. But that only stirred more excitement in my mind. It just wasn't enough. I needed something better.
One Saturday morning, I was sitting in my living room reading the paper with the shades open so I could bring the outdoors in, but all I saw were those gray skies and bare trees.
Then it suddenly hit me. I needed a tropical space that reminded me of my last summer vacation. A room all to myself. A room that brought me peace and helped lift the stresses of everyday life. I needed that feeling of ultimate relaxation and rejuvenation. A tropical room to take away the winter blues, my very own tropical island paradise.
I decided at that very moment to create a tropical Caribbean getaway. This room had to be perfect. When entering this room, I had to feel I just stepped into a vacation. I had to feel I was somewhere else. I had to feel I was on a tropical island in the Carribean. It had to look, feel, smell, and sound like a tropical paradise.
I had picked a room that never gets any use. When I say "never," I mean I couldn't remember the last time I was in there. This, after all, was the smallest room in the house.
I removed all the furniture and replaced it with my patio furniture that was under a tarp in the corner of my yard. I wasn't using my patio furniture anyway, and that gave my room an outdoor feel.
I then went online and purchased some inexpensive picture prints of tropical locations. I picked picture prints that looked as if the artist was in the Carribean and snapped a shot from the hotel room. They were the kind that make you feel that you are there and the view from the window was only steps away.
I then took the picture print down to the local paint store and had the colors of the rooms matched. The idea was to paint a wall the same color of the very room I was looking out, through the print of course. Once the wall was painted, I glued the print to the wall like wallpaper. I was creating a hotel room or maybe a small bed and breakfast in my very own home.
If you're having a problem visualizing a tropical paradise, go on line and search the Carribean for pictures of resorts and hotels to get your ideas.
Next I took all the tropical house plants I had and put them in there as well. I even went out and purchased more and filled the room with plants: some real, some fake. Wow, it was starting to come together. I was already feeling the spring in the air.
I added a small CD player I had buried in a closet and purchased some CDs. I had purchased CDs with sounds of tropical birds, the ocean, and even a mixture of natural sounds with steel drums, the kind you hear when in the Caribbean. You can also use an iPod with external speakers and download music off of iTunes. However you get the sounds, the idea here is to get some sounds the make you feel good, something that makes you smile, and reminds you of your favorite tropical paradise.
So I then had the look and sound, but what about the feel and smell of this tropical paradise I'm creating? The smell was easy thanks to those Glade Plug-Ins or your favorite oil that you can put in an oil burner. There are all kinds of wonderful scents to choose from. Just pick a couple of different ones and experiment until you have the perfect scent.
I then bought an indoor fountain and placed it right in the center of the room. You could use an outdoor fountain if you would like, but the goal is to choose a fountain that will give the sound of moving water.
Now that I had the sounds, the feel, the look, and the smell, I was finally in a happy, relaxing, tropical atmosphere that made me feel better, especially after a hard day at work. I now spend my Saturday mornings reading the paper in my very own tropical island paradise. Any avenue that helped lift the stresses of everyday life will bring you to a better feeling place.
