When to Use a Dehumidifier?
- When you have a forced-air furnace, the air within your home is re-circulated, thus allowing certain rooms to have a high humidity level; especially if the outdoor humidity is relatively high. To reduce the humidity caused by this type of furnace, place the dehumidifier in a room that is cooled or heated by furnace ducting. When you activate the dehumidifier, air throughout your home will pass through the dehumidifier due to air circulation. This is useful if you need to dehumidify your entire home.
- Basements are typically located underneath the house, thus making this space cooler than the rest of the home. This cool indoor space combined with warm outdoor temperatures may cause the basement to retain air moisture. Many think that by simply opening a window or door the excess air moisture will leave; however, this is counter effective because when the warm outside air meets the cool basement air condensation is increased. Thus, place the dehumidifier in the center of the basement to remove the air moisture. Empty the water collection bin more frequently in this area of the home as it typically sees a much higher humidity level than the rest of the house.
- Dehumidifiers are perhaps most commonly known for their ability to bring relief for those who are suffering from asthma or chest colds. Since the dehumidifier removes excess air moisture it frees the air for easier breathing. To relieve chest colds or asthma, place the dehumidifier in a room where the inflicted rest and allow the dehumidifier to run for several hours.
- Moisture is one of the main culprits in ruined property as it's the ideal environment for mold and bacteria development. Beyond the health ramifications of living in a home with mold, this substance can cause structural damage, especially to wood beams and other porous surfaces. If you live in a humid environment or have high home humidity, place a dehumidifier in the moistest areas of the home and circulate the dehumidifier throughout the home.
