Understanding Iron Deficiency Hair Loss

There are a lot of people that experience hair loss and not all of them are happy about it. In fact, most people would rather keep a full head of hair but some feel that genetics simply have another plan for them. The thing is though, there is some hair loss that can be prevented and maybe even reversed. This goes for both men and women. One type of hair loss is iron deficiency hair loss.

Most people have never heard that a deficiency can cause hair loss, but over forty years worth of studies shows that it is possible. While this might still be a controversial issue, many have found that there is evidence to suggest that hair growth can begin to take place once iron deficiency is dealt with.

Now, with this said, just because you are losing your hair it doesn't mean that you are suffering from iron deficiency hair loss. If it turns out that you don't actually have an iron deficiency, taking iron supplements could create an entirely new problem. In fact, it can be down right dangerous if you end up overloading your body with too much iron.

Another thing that you need to realize is that even if you have an iron deficiency that is causing the problem, you might still be genetically predisposed to suffer hair loss. However, the iron deficiency hair loss is basically speeding up the process. Even if you are not genetically able to reverse the hair loss for yourself, you can at least slow it down.

Now, in order to learn whether or not you are, you are going to want to talk to a medical professional. Only someone in the medical field will be able to properly test you and let you know whether or not you have an iron deficiency. You will want to then talk about what supplements you can take.

If you want to start making healthy and safe changes in your own, while you are waiting for your doctors appointment, you can start to add various iron-rich foods into your diet. Foods such as lentils, oysters, lean beef, prunes, beans, tofu, spinach and raisins are full of iron. You can add these to your diet to increase your iron, without risking the dangers that could come with the iron supplements.

As you can see, you have a lot to think about, some groceries to purchase and possibly a doctor's appointment to set. Make sure that you are doing what you can to slow down hair loss or at least learn what may be causing it, as the hair loss could be an indication of a bigger medical problem.
