How to Make & Design Your Own Invitations

    Use an Online System

    • 1). Go to a website like HP Creative Studio, Greetings Island or American Greeting. All of these sites have online design systems that allow you to create customized invitations.

    • 2). Access the design system on the HP Creative Studio, Greetings Island or American Greetings website. On HP Creative Studio, choose the "Customize Your Card" option. On Greetings Island, click "Printables" and choose a theme, such as "Birthday" or "Anniversary" from the options that come up. On American Greetings, click the "Click Here to Get Started" button and enter a username and password to use on the site.

    • 3). Click any of the design or style options that appear on the screen to make a selection. Choose a smaller card size, such as 3x5, which is a common size for an invitation. When the preview of that card option opens, press "Select this template" to open it in HP Creative Studio. In Greetings Island and American, the theme card opens automatically when you click on it.

    • 4). Use the tools in HP Creative Studio, Greetings Island or American Greetings to add the text that you want in the invitation. In HP Creative Studio, click "Inside" to enter text for the interior of the card. In Greetings Island, click the page of the card that you want to edit, and then the button labeled "Text" when you hover over it on the toolbar to enter your customized text. In American Greetings, go to the page on the card you want to edit and click the "Text" button.

    • 5). Add photos to a Greetings Island or American Greetings card just as you added the text. Choose the page of the card on which you would like to add the photo and click the "Photo" button. Find the photo that you want to add to the card in the window that comes up and double-click it to place it on the card.

    • 6). Press the "Preview and print" button in HP Creative Studio or American Greetings or the "Print" button in Greetings Island to view the card that you created. If you are happy with the design, click "Print It" or "Print" again to print the card out.

    Use a Graphic Design Program

    • 1). Download an invitation template for the graphic design program you commonly use on your computer. Sites like 5dfly and DesignLoad provide templates for a variety of graphics programs. Click on "Details" for any card to see the program for which the template was designed.

    • 2). Launch the design program, and open the template by going to "File," "Open" and selecting the template in the window that comes up. Click on any section of the template to highlight the object or text in that section and replace it with your own customized photos or text.

    • 3). Delete a selected object in the template by pressing the "Delete" button on your keyboard. Right-click the spot in the template where you deleted the object and choose "Change picture." Select a picture from your computer in the window that opens to insert the new picture in place of the original object in the template.

    • 4). Delete text in the template by pressing "Delete" while the text is still highlighted. Begin typing to add new text to the text block in the template. Don't forget to include all of the information people need for the event, such as location, date and time.

    • 5). Print a completed invitation by going to "File" and "Print." If you would like sturdy invitations that hold up well when mailed, print the invitations onto cardstock.
