Henin is Taken out from French Open Sports Book
Justine Henin was the favorite at the sportsbook to win the French Open in women's singles.
The four-time French Open victor was taken out by seventh-seeded Samantha Stosur, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 on Monday. The loss concluded a 24-match winning streak for Henin at the French Open and exposed the tournament in odds at the sportsbook for number one seed Serena Williams.
Before the French Open commenced, sportsbook odds preferred Henin with Serena Williams the 2nd choice. Now both Henin and Williams were taken out from the tournament. Williams lost to Samantha Stosur on Wednesday. Henin had advised everyone that she wasn't back at the condition of competition she was two years ago. Due to the fact of her excellent success at Roland Garros, however, she had been preferred at the French Open.
Henin is graded No 23 on the planet now, but she was No 1 in 2008 right before she took a brief retirement from the game. If she had continued playing, she may have held that ranking a while longer. She might have gone on to be a 3-time defending champ in the French Open for 2008. However, she is taking it in stride after coming back to the game and failing to take back the French Open this year.
"All the expectations are coming from the outside, you know," said Henin. "Everyone wants to see me at the level that I was and to compete. But the confidence I got in 2007, it took many years to be at that level."
Henin understood there was an opportunity she'd require a year to escalate back up in the rankings. It is to be seen if and how rapidly she pulls that off.
Stosur is no pushover when it comes to competing on clay, however losing had been a surprise. She made the semifinals past year and she leads the tour with a record of 18-2 on clay this year. Stosur was a huge underdog against the sportsbook odds again when she got her chance to get rid of Serena in the quarterfinals. Serena has won two of the past three Grand Slams and was the favorite to win the French Open. The other quarterfinal for that half had 4th-seed Jelena Jankovic heavily preferred vs 36th graded Yaroslava Shvedova. Jankovic won that game. The other two quarterfinals had 3rd seeded Caroline Wozniacki taking on Francesca Schiavone and fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva facing Nadia Petrova. Schiavone and Dementieva won their respective games. Schiavone proceeded on to the finals with Stosur, and in a victory that jumped her to No six on the planet rankings, Schiavone took the win.
The situation is a bit more on form against the odds at the sportsbook on the men's singles. 4-time champ Rafael Nadal reached the quarterfinals with a straight set win over No 24 Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil. Nicolas Almagro, who upset No 7 Fernando Verdasco, then confronted Nadal. Nadal took that match. The other quarterfinal on the lower half in French Open probabilities at the sportsbook had 3rd-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia facing No 22 Jurgen Melzer of Austria, a match that Melzer won in an outstanding recovery. The top half of the quarterfinals had number one seed Roger Federer dealing with fifth seed Robin Soderling and Tomas Berdych facing Mikhail Youzhny. Soderling performed a substantial upset and overcame Federer, while Berdych overcame Youzhny. Nadal and Soderling went to the finals together. Nadal claimed his fifth French Open gambling title, and in the process got his revenge vs the Swede for his loss last year.
