How to Mix Acrylic Enamel
- 1). Decide how much paint you will need for your project. Different additives can be mixed in with your paint to make it thinner or dry faster. Read the label for the ratio of paint to be mixed with the thinner and hardener. If using a thinner or reducer, less paint will be needed.
- 2). Mix the colors together, if needed. If the brand and type of the paint are the same -- both acrylic enamel -- mixing them together should be simple. In a separate, disposable container, mix a small amount of the two paint colors together at a time to get the color you want.
- 3). Thin your paint, if needed. Read the label of the paint. If it is oil-based, you will need mineral spirits, also known as white spirits, to thin the paint. If it is water-based, using water will suffice. Slowly add the thinning agent to the paint until you get the desired body. If you add too much, balance it out with more paint.
- 4). Add a reducer, if needed. A paint reducer is a thinner, but does not dilute the color. Because it comes in colors, you can match it to your paint color. A reducer may be needed if you are using an airbrush and the tip is small. Reducing the thickness will allow it to flow easier and be applied more smoothly.
- 5). Mix the paint with a paint stirrer until it is well mixed. Add the hardener, if needed. This should be done last. The amount of the hardener needed should be much less than the paint.
- 6). Mix with a paint stirrer again, until it is completely blended. Use a funnel to transfer the paint into your airbrush, if using one. Use the paint immediately.
