Landscaping Ideas for Front Yard Flower Beds

    Location

A flower bed is often the focal point in a landscape design, so choose its location carefully. Near the front door, the bed creates a sense of welcome. Placed further out in the yard, the flower bed can enliven the street and provide privacy on your side of the property. Consider also the setting of the flower bed. A background of shrubs makes the colors pop, and extends seasonal interest.

    Shape

Whether you prefer strong geometric shapes or a free-flowing curve is a matter of style. Look to the architecture of the house and extend the theme into the landscaping. Geometric forms tend to be more formal, suited to traditional architecture; curves are informal and asymmetrical, compatible with more contemporary house design. Emphasize edges or curves in the walkways by following them with the flower bed, or place flowers to soften concrete driveways with their color and texture.

    Flower Power

Limit the color palette of the flower bed for the best effect. Stay with two or three harmonious colors, and select a variety of flowers within that range. Then play with a few contrasting colors for interest. Be careful with mixing hot -- reds and oranges -- and cool -- whites, pinks, and blues. Different species will provide variety in height and texture, and similar colors will tie them together. Extend the blooming time by mixing perennials and annuals.

    Objects

Use objects to create surprise and contrast in the flower bed and encourage people to look more closely, and linger. Elements such as a special stone collected on a trip or garden ornaments made by your children can show an appealing personal touch that gives your beds character. Materials that contrast with plants, such as copper, stone and glass, offer textural interest. Encourage birds to stay by setting out a container of water and they'll animate the front yard with their movement and song.
