How to Solve Subtraction Problems

    • 1). Put the first number in the equation on top of the other number. For example, if the equation is 56 minus 49, then write 56 on top of 49.

    • 2). Draw a line under the second number.

    • 3). Subtract the numbers on the far right first. If the number on top is smaller then the number on the bottom, then write a one next to the number and reduce the number to the left by one. In the example, 56-49, put a 1 next to the 6 to make 16. Then change the 5 to a 4. Now, subtract 9 from 16

    • 4). Continue to the numbers to the left and repeat the steps until you have no more numbers to the left.
