The Pros & Cons of Acrylic & Plastic Polishes

    Pros

    • Acrylic or plastic sheeting is a soft material that scratches easily. Properly care for your plastic products by using cleaners and polishes designed for plastic. Plastic cleaners and polishes typically reduce the appearance of scratches and provide a lustrous shine, resist fogging, repel dust and eliminate static. Some products also claim to resist finger markings. Many plastic care products come in kits that contain a cleaner and two scratch remover products: one for fine scratches and one for heavy scratches and abrasions.

    Cons

    • Unfortunately, some plastic cleaning and polishing products do not work as advertised. Some products may dry too quickly, causing the product to clump. Some products require an additional purchase of a buffer, if you do not have one. A variety of plastic polishing compounds is for use on plastics while they turn on a lathe. This is not possible with vehicles, windshields and other large plastic products. When shopping, read the labels thoroughly to make sure you have the right product for your needs. Some polishes contain harsh chemicals that may be dangerous for you and the plastic you use it on.

    Homemade Cleaner

    • To avoid harsh chemicals, many people prefer to make their own plastic cleaner and polish. It is easy to find recipes for homemade cleaning and polishing products. When choosing a recipe for a plastic polish, it should contain natural beeswax. Use only soft cloths, such as microfiber cloths when cleaning and polishing plastics. Make sure your plastic is not polycarbonate before using any products on it.

    Polycarbonate Plastics

    • If you are repairing and polishing a motorcycle windshield, it is probably made of polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is as transparent as glass is, and harder than acrylic. Acrylic windshields are illegal in many states, as they tend to shatter on impact. Plastic polycarbonate is sensitive to ammonia and general glass cleaners. It requires a protective coating to prevent it from absorbing moisture from the air. Do not use plastic scratch repair products on polycarbonate plastics. Use instead, a polymer polish.
