- 1). Choose a hot mud that gives you enough time to complete your project. A 90-minute drying time is recommended for most beginners.
- 2). Fill a plastic pan with water. The mixture you make is one part water to two parts hot mud, so decide on the amount you need to make before you pour in the water.
- 3). Pour in twice the amount of hot mud as water.
- 4). Stir the mixture until smooth with a paint mixer. Mix for about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the lumps but don't over-mix because this decreases the setting time which gives you less time to complete your job. Adjust the mixture as needed. Add more water to make the mixture thinner or more hot mud to make it thicker.
