Outdoor adventures and activities in Jamaica

With a spectacular coastline, majestic Blue Mountains, lush forest, gorgeous beaches and navigable rivers, Jamaica is the perfect destination for outdoor activities.  This compact island nation attracts more than a million visitors to its shores every year and has also pioneered the concept of private holiday villas, or Caribbean villas, to take the experience of the holidaymakers to a whole new level. While the island is perfect to lounge around and soak the tropical sun, those who are looking for active pursuits will find plenty to keep them occupied.

There are several tour operators that offer guided tours on the island. The most famous name is that of Chukka Caribbean Adventures that has several awards to its credit. The company offers several exciting tours including the highly popular original canopy tour. As the name suggests, you will travel over the canopy of trees to get a bird's eye view of the stunning countryside. You will be strapped into a harness and then zipline along a wire about 600 feet above the ground.

There is also a huge range of water activities on offer including scuba diving along the miles of coral reef. The water is warm and the visibility is high, sometimes as high as 100 feet. Some interesting dive sites include the Alligator Head where you can see sponge formations; Fairy Hill Banks where you can see Hammerhead sharks; and Throne Room near Negril and Ricky's Reef. There are several tour operators that offer diving trips at San San Beach and Dragon Bay resorts. Apart from diving, you can also go for a swim or float on a raft on the famous Blue Lagoon, which is rumoured to be bottomless.

Bamboo rafting is a favourite activity in Jamaica and the best place to head to is Port Antonio. According to legends, these raft rides originated with film star Errol Flynn when he organized races with locals transporting bananas on these rafts. These bamboo rafting trips are for approximately three hours and provide you the opportunity to enjoy the stunning views of the riverside.

You can also go for a bicycle tour of the Blue Mountains where the world-famous Blue Mountain Coffee is grown. The day tour includes several stops on the way for photo opportunities. On the way to Hardware Gap, you may even get to see coffee farmers.

Jamaica also has plenty of world class golf courses to offer the golf enthusiasts. The White Witch Golf Course is considered to be the best in the Caribbean. It is spread out on a former sugar plantation, and the golfers can enjoy a challenging game in the 18 holes against the beautiful backdrop of the Caribbean Sea.

These are just some of the activities that you can enjoy in Jamaica. Aside from the popular places, there are off-the-beaten tracks you can explore. If you are staying in Caribbean villas, you can seek the advice and help of the local staff to arrange for tours and transfers to the places of interest.
