How to Decorate a Red Hurricane Vase
- 1). Clean your hurricane vase with warm soapy water and rinse well. Wipe the vase dry to make sure there are no spots or residue left behind. Make sure it is completely dry and water spot free before painting.
- 2). Cover up your work area with newspapers to catch any spilled or speckled paint. Keep paper towels near by to wipe any excess paint off of the brushes. A cup of clean water will also be needed to wash the paint off the brush between colors. The paint brush to use should have small fine and soft bristles that come to a point.
- 3). Paint a design of tiny dots or crisscrosses on the vase, if you are unsure of your artistic ability. They should not be more than 1/8 of an inch in size to give the vase a detailed look. If you are confident, you can try a more intricate design of leaves or small flowers.
- 4). Which ever you choose, the trick to making the vase a piece of artwork is to paint the designs at least two inches apart. You are just giving your vase accents, so small and far apart is the correct way to paint these designs. For larger vases a distance of three to four inches would work best. Use this pattern if you chose to paint designs on the entire vase. You can also do a ring of designs in a line around the vase. The ring can be painted around the center or the rim of the vase. If you keep the design small enough, you can paint both. When painting a ring of designs, you can bring the designs as close together as you want, just as long as you keep them small. They can even touch, giving the appearance of a chain.
- 5). Pick out the colors that will not only go with your décor, but compliment the red color of your hurricane vase. Any shade of white will make your painted design stand out. If you are going for an antique look, cobalt blue will mimic the colors used in antique glass from the years gone by. You can choose more than one color and depending on the design, multiple colors can also be used. For a Christmas hurricane vase, white and green will adorn the red in the colors of the season. Green Holly leafs and white snowflakes make a traditional Christmas pattern.
- 6). Once you are done painting, your vase should sit overnight so the paint can completely dry. Then it is ready for you to dress it up. Flowers, pine twigs, pine cones or eucalyptus branches will look great inside this new piece of artwork.
