How to Change the Code on a Digital Door Lock
- 1). Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for your lock to remove it from the door if it is still installed. Most digital door locks have two long screws that are removed from the interior side of the door.
- 2). Turn the lock over so that the keypad is facing downward.
- 3). Examine the back of the lock and locate the screws that hold the back cover on. There are usually at least two screws, one at the top of the lock and one at the bottom of the lock. Insert a screwdriver into each screw hole and turn it counterclockwise to remove each screw.
- 4). Lift the back plate carefully off of the lock and set it aside. Examine each of the holes in the lock and you will notice that some are red and some are blue. The red colored holes correspond to the current combination.
- 5). Insert a pair of tweezers into one each of the red holes and grasp the metal chips. Pull them out gently and lay them on the table.
- 6). Decide what you want the new combination to be and remove the blue chips from the numbered holes that correspond to the desired combination. As you remove each blue chip, replace it with a red chip. When you insert a chip, ensure that the square cut out on the side of the chip is facing the outside of the lock.
- 7). Fill in any empty holes with the blue chips and examine the holes to make sure that your desired combination has red chips in each numbered hole.
- 8). Place the back cover onto the lock and hold it down with one hand. Insert the screws with the other hand and tighten them using a screwdriver.
- 9). Turn the digital lock over so that the keypad is facing you. Press the "C" or "Clear" button and then enter the new numbered code. The lock should open if you inserted each metal tab correctly.
