How to Design an In-ground Swimming Pool Plan

    • 1). Choose a theme for the yard around your pool. For instance, if you live in a desert area, a Western or Tuscan theme is ideal. If you live in a wooded area, a Mediterranean theme will better fit the setting.

    • 2). Choose a shape for your in-ground pool. To do this, consider the people who will use the pool. If you have children, an L-shaped pool may be ideal due to the fact that the "L" creates two separate areas, one of which can be shallow for the kids. A rectangular-shaped pool is ideal if you enjoy swimming laps and partaking in water sports. Kidney and oval-shaped pools are attractive options, and a free-form pool can be sculpted to your specifications. With a free-form pool, you can have it separated into three parts, incorporating aspects of your landscaping.

    • 3). Choose the materials and finish you want for the interior of your pool. Some of the options include concrete or gunite, vinyl, fiberglass and pebble.

    • 4). Choose the border and decking you want around your pool. Options include stone, brick or concrete. For the decking, you can have wood, concrete, brick or stone.

    • 5). List all of the activities you enjoy as well as the options you want in your pool, such as a net for playing volleyball, lighting effects and ladders.

    • 6). Determine the equipment you want for cleaning and maintenance. There are a variety of options available, some of which are manual and others that are automatic.

    • 7). Finish the design with the landscaped area around your pool and the accessories you will use to accent the pool area.
