How to Design a Yellow Kitchen

    • 1). Determine color of walls and window treatments first. Choose a pale yellow for two walls and white for two walls, for example. Select a bright yellow for one accent wall and antique white for the other three walls as another choice. Use pale yellow for all walls with white trim and white plantation shutters as a practical choice.

    • 2). Plan the room in terms of your home's style and architecture. Use high-quality cherry cabinets if your home is a traditional brick, for example. Use light maple or white cabinets, if your house is high-tech. Create the kitchen plan in terms of how formal or casual nearby rooms are. Plan to buy light fixtures, tile and appliances to harmonize with the home's overall design. Choose an Italian-look chandelier if the kitchen has a vaulted ceiling and nearby living space has an Italian-look chandelier, for instance.

    • 3). Plan the counter tops, cabinets and flooring before choosing appliances. Install the counters, cabinets and sink with designated spaces allowed for the appliances.

    • 4). Use white or stainless appliances, in most cases, to blend well with yellow. Choose all stainless appliances, if your cabinetry is high-end wood, such as mahogany or cherry. Use white appliances for a less formal kitchen.

    • 5). Select yellow tiles for various spaces in the kitchen. Use bright yellow tiles above the backsplash area. Install a checkered tile floor using 12-inch white tiles and 12-inch medium-yellow tiles, for example. Add yellow tiles above cabinets, if they don't reach all the way to the ceiling. Install tiles over drywall in the top 12 to 18 inches of wall space above upper cabinets.

    • 6). Accent the room with yellow touches. Use yellow curtains, yellow picture frames, yellow flower pots for a window herb garden, or yellow tile counter tops, as possible choices. Draw every detail with colored pencils before buying or installing your selections. Use an artist's eye in what looks appropriate, because overdoing the yellow initially is difficult to correct. Go back to add yellow bar stool cushions or a yellow area rug, if you need more color.
