How do I Install a Flagstone Free-Standing Patio?

    • 1). Choose the location. Spray-paint a line around the perimeter of the site.

    • 2). Measure the site to determine the number of flagstones and the amount of sand you will need.

    • 3). Dig up the sod within the patio site.

    • 4). Remove 2 inches of dirt from the entire site to make room for a bed of landscaping sand and the flagstones.

    • 5). Level the entire site with a garden rack and hoe. Check often with a carpenter's level to ensure the site is level.

    • 6). Spread 1 inch of landscaping sand over the entire site evenly. Check often with a carpenter's level to ensure the landscaping sand is level.

    • 7). Lay flagstone in the landscaping sand. Space each flagstone approximately 1/2 inch apart. Check often to ensure the flagstones ares level.

    • 8). Add blocking sand to the top of the flagstones. Sweep the blocking sand into the spaces between the flagstones.

    • 9). Spray the flagstone free-standing patio gently with water to help set the blocking sand.
