What Do Green Plants Need?

    Sunlight

    • Plants are reliant on sunlight to live. Unlike animals that eat other organisms to survive, plants have cells that utilize sunlight to make their own food in a process known as photosynthesis.

    Air

    • Like animals, plants also need fresh air to breath. While animals inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, plants do the exact opposite. Plants use carbon dioxide in photosynthesis and exhale oxygen.

    Soil

    • Plants also need soil to survive. They take in water and nutrients from the soil via their root systems. Nutrients and minerals come from decaying matter in the soil. It also allows the plant to anchor itself.
