Curbing Down Caffeine - A True Story
Question: What country has the most number of coffee drinkers?
Answer: Australia.
I'm kidding, but the current trends in our drinking habits can make us the top coffee drinking nation. This is not bad -- technically.
How many cups of coffee are you drinking right now? Is it two, three, four or even more?
Fact: Coffee is really addictive, and this can be hazardous to one's health.
I remember when I was a college freshman doing assignments and projects. Most of the times, I need to extend my waking hours to finish my school requirements. Because I am staying inside the campus dormitory, I can't wake myself the usual way - running, dribbling a football or throwing a three-point shot at the basketball court.
So, what I did is the most convenient way to perk myself up. I drank three cups of iced coffee.
After doing sorts of projects, theses and examinations, I managed to graduate from school - but not from caffeine addiction.
Currently working at a brokerage firm analysing thousands of shares, a cup of coffee is like a friendly companion. But things went for a change when I played basketball with my colleagues.
After full time, my fellow mates and I were defeated by other blokes. I wasn't able to display my brilliant three-point shots and my stamina decreased into an all-time low.
It was among one of the turning points for me. Now I know that coffee did more harm than good, and I felt that it's too late for me.
I am not the only one who's succumbing to the addictive properties of coffee. Excluding coffee, soda also contains large amounts of caffeine. Moreover, the influx of cafes into cities attracts potential coffee addicts - and the age bracket is getting younger.
I was 18 when I started my love affair with ice coffees, and I admit that decreasing my caffeine intake is a hard task. Not drinking even a cup of coffee is even harder than analysing the ASX 200 index!
According to a program called Hypnotherapy SA, withdrawal is amongst one of the symptoms of quitting coffee. It is accompanied with headaches, nausea and other psychological problems. For a busy analyst like me, I want to enjoy my life beyond the confines of the securities exchange.
I was bloody terrified and downhearted, but Hypnotherapy Adelaide told me that depression caused by withdrawal can be surmounted.
At first it was a hard time for me. Coping each day without my daily dose of coffee is like living an incomplete life. Fortunately after months of discipline, I managed to rebound from the slump. My performance on shooting and analyses sprang into an all-time high. My stamina skyrocketed!
Now, I can throw my accurate three-point shots that we were able to defeat the other blokes. It was an ego-boosting experience! I know it's hard to curb down caffeine, but with sheer discipline and willingness, it's possible.
To borrow a sports tagline; impossible is nothing!
