• The Vortec 5300 is a 5.3-liter V8 engine that employs Active Fuel Management technology, which turns off cylinders during lighter driving in order to increase fuel economy. For instance, when a Tahoe with the Vortec 5300 is cruising at highway speeds, it is using only four cylinders. When it is accelerating from a slower speed to a higher one, it uses all eight cylinders.
