Claiborne and Churchill Dry Gewurztraminer Alsatian Style 2006 Wine Review
This is a food friendly, California Central Coast white wine, under $18.
00 a bottle, which will pair very well with roast chicken or a traditional turkey dinner.
From the claiborne and churchill website "We are impressed by the fruit, length, minerality and the finesse of the 2006 vintage.
Unmistakable aromas of kaffir lime and white peach greet you from the glass, balancing racy acidity and rich fruit.
Although fresh and lovely in its youth, this is unquestionably a wine with the ability to age well under proper cellar conditions, developing nuance and character as it reaches maturity over the next decade or more.
" Background Gewürztraminer grapes are capable of making some very fine wines.
Unfortunately here in California especially they have been associated with some very bad sugary wines.
While Gewürztraminer is usually assumed to be a mild sweet wine -and indeed it can be used to make some fine dessert wines, it also makes a fine dry white wine.
It performs best in cooler climates where the sugar levels stay in balance with its acidity.
This particular Gewürztraminer grapes came from the cool Monterey Wine region.
Our observations: When we opened the bottle we at once notice the pronounced floral aromas characteristic of this wine.
In the glass the wine was a transparent gold color.
Swirling the glass we notice moderate tears indicating the lighter structure we were looking for.
The aroma of the wine had the lovely floral characteristics we expected in the wine, We also noticed a nice citrus aroma of pink grapefruit and tangerine.
On the palette, the wine was substantial but light, off-dry with a very slight sweetness and a nice prickly level of acidity.
The alcohol level at 12.
5% was light, but enough to give a sense of a nice mouth full.
Although some barrel aging was used in the processing, there was no real perceptible tannins in the taste.
The finish was long and smooth, leaving a light lingering citrus aftertaste.
Well, we are not sure what "kaffir lime" is, but we really like this wine.
The complexity of the floral and citrus overtones make it much more interesting to drink than a typical Chardonnay.
And the dryness and low alcohol level at 12.
5% will keep you alert and conversant! As a food wine.
it has just the right amount of sweetness and citrus overtones to complement roasted chicken or turkey preferable with an Italian style fruit stuffing of apples and golden raisins -one of our favorites! This wine particular wine would also complement Asian style foods.
It has good acidly and the low tannins will complement the hot pepper used in Asian style cooking such as Thai Cuisine.
