How to Protect the Roof With a Grill on the Patio

    • 1). Cover the grill, as the food cooks, to prevent escaping heat, flames or sparks from coming into contact with anything nearby. A fire that starts on a deck, for example, can quickly spread to the roof of the home. Use the cover that comes with the grill for best results.

    • 2). Relocate any items around the grill so they are a safe distance away. This prevents them from igniting in a fire that could spread to the roof.

    • 3). Watch the grill at all times when it is in operation. Never leave it unattended, even with the cover on. If you have to go somewhere or use the restroom while grilling, ask another responsible adult to monitor the grill in your absence.

    • 4). Check any nearby overhangs regularly by feeling them with the back of your hand to ensure they are not hot to the touch due to the grill's operation. If the roof feels hot, turn off the grill or cover it immediately.
