Dupuytren"s Contracture - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Dupuytren's contracture, also known as Dupuytren's disease, is an uncommon condition in which the connective tissue under the skin of the palm gradually contracts and thickens, causing a deformity in the hand.
This disease most commonly affects the ring finger and the little finger.
Family history, diabetes, and tobacco and alcohol use, are known risk factors for this disease.
The Ayurvedic treatment of Dupuytren's contracture is aimed at treating the cause of the disease and preventing deformity of the hand.
Medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Medohar-Guggulu, Kaishor-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu and Punarnavadi-Guggulu are used in high doses to prevent the skin and connective tissue from thickening and contracting.
Medicines like Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Musta (Cyperus rotundus) and Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris) are also used to prevent the disease from progressing.
Medicines like Mandukparni (Centella asiatica) and Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra) help in the formation of healthy collagen tissue underneath the skin.
Patients who do not appear to benefit from the above-mentioned medicines are given alternative medicines like Arogya-Vardhini, Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Abhrak-Bhasma, Trivang-Bhasma and Suvarna-Sameer-Pannag-Ras.
Localized treatment is given in the form of local applications, massage and fomentation.
Medicines like Mahanarayan oil, Mahamash oil, Mahasaindhav oil, Vishgarbha oil, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut, Shatadhout-Ghrut and Yashtimadhuk-Ghrut are used for simple application and also for daily massage on the affected area.
Localized steam fomentation is given of medicines like Nirgundi-Qadha and Dashmool-Qadha.
If patients do not respond to these simple procedures combined with oral medication, periodical blood-letting from the veins near the palm or wrist is done using a disposable syringe and needle.
All affected individuals should undergo physical therapy both before and after treatment.
This usually involves exercises to improve the ability to move the fingers.
Overall, treatment for this condition may be required for periods ranging from one to six months.
