How to Clean Tobacco Stains From Fabric

    • 1). Pour a moderate amount of glycerin over the tobacco stained fabric. Use a dry rag to rub the glycerin into the fabric.

    • 2). Allow the glycerin to sit on the fabric for a few minutes. Apply a laundry spot stain remover such as Shout or Spray-n-Wash to the stain. Leave it on the stain for about 30 minutes.

    • 3). Wash the fabric as usual. If the tobacco stain is on machine-washable fabric, place it in the washer. For nonmachine-washable fabrics, wipe the fabric with a wet rag to remove the glycerin and other residue from the fabric. Wipe the fabric several times, rinsing out the rag frequently, to ensure all traces of the glycerin, laundry spot remover and tobacco stain are gone.

    • 4). Allow the fabric to air dry once it has been washed. Avoid placing the fabric in the dryer until you are sure all of the tobacco stain has been removed. The heat from the dryer will set in the stain further.

    • 5). Use sodium thiosulphate if the tobacco stain persists. You can buy sodium thiosulphate at many home improvement stores, pool supply stores or places where aquariums and fish tanks are sold.

    • 6). Mix 1 tsp. sodium thiosulphate with 1 cup warm water into a bowl. Stir the ingredients with a spoon to combine.

    • 7). Dip a sponge into the mixture and sponge the solution onto the tobacco stain. Make sure the stain is saturated with the solution.

    • 8). Let the mixture soak into the fabric for about 30 minutes. Rinse the fabric with plain water.

    • 9). Place washable items in the washing machine. For nonmachine-washable items, sponge the fabric with a rag and soapy water. Rinse the fabric with a rag and plain water. Allow the fabric to air dry thoroughly.
