How to Get Speaker Wires Under the Carpet
- 1). Pull your entertainment system far enough from the wall so you have a place to work behind the rack of electronic equipment.
- 2). Remove any furniture or other obstacles from the carpet near the path where you will be running speaker wires.
- 3). Push the end of the fish tape underneath the edge of the carpet at the wall behind your entertainment center where you will connect speaker wires to a receiver. The fish tape should fit between the carpet and the padding underneath.
- 4). Thread the fish tape underneath the carpet slowly in the direction of your speakers. You can feel the fish tape through the carpet, so you will always know that you are heading in the right direction.
- 5). If the fish tape snags while you are running it underneath the carpet, pull up slightly on the carpet with your hands while a friend holds the fish tape tool and guides it for you.
- 6). Push the fish tape to the opposite wall where you wish to place your speakers until you can feel the end of the fish tape at the edge of the carpet.
- 7). Pull up slightly on the carpet, so you can reach the end of the fish tape.
- 8). Loop the end of a piece of speaker wire through the hook on the end of the fish tape and tie it securely. It's important that the ends of the speaker wire be covered with a short piece of electrician's tape, so the wire ends cannot snag on the carpet during the next step.
- 9). Pull gently on the fish tape from behind your entertainment center to draw the tape with the attached speaker wire back under the carpet toward your audio equipment. Work slowly to prevent snags or pulling up the padding underneath the carpet, which will create a bumpy appearance.

Remove the fish tape with the attached speaker wire from beneath the edge of the carpet behind your entertainment center. - 11
Pull several feet of speaker wire up through the carpet behind your electronic gear, so you'll have enough wire length to connect the wire to your receiver, plus a bit of slack. - 12
Clip and strip the ends of the speaker wires, and then connect to the appropriate speaker terminals on the back of your receiver.
