An Overview of the benefits Shower temperature maintained, even when other water appliances in the house are in use Automatically control your shower temperature so that it remains constant Easy to install and compatible with most plumbing systems There is no risk of scalding, especially useful for elderly or disabled users or those with young children Thermostatic mixer showers have a safety cut off built-in, in case of extremes in water temperature.
The Details Hot water is a known killer and the bathroom can be a dangerous place if safety measures are not implemented.
Hot water is responsible for the highest number of fatal injuries in the home averaging around some 20 people each year, with an additional 500+ people suffering genuinely serious injuries from scalding.
Hot water needs to be treated with great respect as it can be as dangerous as an open flame, and can often cause extensive disfigurement for life.
The very young and elderly people are often the most at risk in these situations as their skin is much more delicate, and 2nd and 3rd degree burns from scalding are most common within these age groups.
Maintaining temperature stability goes a very long way in helping to prevent injury from hot water.
Thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) are devices used to regulate and maintain a steady mixed water supply at a safely set temperature of only ±2°C before it is discharged to your shower.
They also include a shut-off mechanism in the event that the cold water supply fails, preventing an influx of scalding hot water capable of causing very serious injury.
Standard manufacturer setting offer a maximum showering temperature of between 38°C and 43°C.
However, most will also offer an override function if you feel that a slightly warmer temperature is required, and having set a showering temperature the thermostatic device within the mixing valve will maintain that temperature.
Thermostatic mixing valves maintain the set temperature even when pressure or temperature changes occur in water supplies.
They also afford the added safeguard of shutting off the flow entirely should there be a loss in either the hot or cold supplies.
On top of the obvious safety benefits of thermostatic controls, they also offer the added convenience of maintaining water temperature even when another item is utilising the water supply simultaneously - for example if the dishwasher is turned on whilst you are showering.
This would often affect water temperature and pressure, meaning a sudden influx of very hot or very cold water.
However with a thermostatic control you would only notice a slight drop in water pressure and the water temperature would remain at a constant safe temperature.
Thermostatic and anti-scald technology is changing the face of showering and the products now becoming available on the market are helping to ensure a much safer environment for everyone.
