- 1). Mix the mortar according to the manufacturer's directions. Add enough water to make the mortar loose but not runny.
- 2). Spray the top layer of the brick's surface with a little water. Spread a 1-inch thick layer of mortar across the surface with a pointed trowel. Don't get any mortar on the brick's face.
- 3). Set the brick into the mortar. Center the brick over the previous row's mortar joint. Pick up a second brick and spread mortar on one end. Place the brick into the mortar, butting the mortared end against the first brick's end.
- 4). Tap the second brick level with the first brick using the trowel's edge. Scrape off any excess mortar coming out from the mortar joints. Select a third brick and repeat.
- 5). Continue setting bricks until you reach the row's end. Use a masonry saw to cut the final brick in half. Spread mortar on the brick's cut end and place it in the mortar.
