Decorating a home allows you to personalize your space and to make a statement about your preferences and your tastes. While some home decorating choices are expensive and require time and effort, there are also some home decorations which are cheap while still being tasteful, personal and creative. - While garlands are most common around the holidays, there is no reason that they cannot give your home some color and texture throughout the year. Look for garlands of silk flowers that you can hang from door frames or mantel places and consider twining long strands of false ivy vines down your stairway rails. This can give your home a very fresh and natural look.
- Small swatches of pretty fabric are fairly inexpensive at fabric and craft stores. Fold back the ragged edges and center them in cheap frames. Hanging a few of these framed pieces of fabric up on your wall can add a sense of texture and color to the room. Choose fabrics that have metallic accents or decorative motifs that are already present in the room.
- A few pillows strewn around your living room or bedroom can add some visual variety to your home, but remember that they do not have to stay plain and white. Instead, liven up the room with a few slipcovers. If you have rudimentary sewing skills, you can sew slipcovers by sewing two rectangles together and hemming the open end and, if you want to get fancy, you can sew on braids, buttons and fringe to decorate it.
- Indoor plants can liven up a living space considerably and, even if you do not have a green thumb, there are some plants that will suit almost any occasion. Consider growing herbs in kitchen windowsills to give the kitchen a rustic atmosphere and, in windows that have strong light, consider growing succulents, which are desert plants and do not require a lot of attention.
- If you have a bare wooden floor, rugs can make the area look more homey and welcoming. They can soften the edges of the room and, by choosing rugs with colors that match or complement the rest of your décor, they can add a finished look to the home. For a rustic look, buy or make rag rugs and, for a more luxurious look, consider shag rugs that have patterns woven or dyed into them. Rugs are a simple addition to the home that can make a significant visual difference.
