How to Clean a Rug Without a Rug Cleaner
- 1). Vacuum the rug with your vacuum cleaner. If it's a small rug or one with fringed edges, you may want to just use the vacuum cleaner hose attachment to avoid damaging the rug. You can also take the rug outside and shake off the loose dirt and debris.
- 2). Soak up any liquid that has been spilled on the rug by blotting with paper towels. If it's just a water spill, you can use a blow dryer on a warm temperature setting to dry the spill.
- 3). Sprinkle your rug with baking soda. This will help absorb any remaining liquid, as well as any odors that have accumulated on your rug. Allow it to sit for several minutes.
- 4). Vacuum up the baking soda after it has had a chance to sit on your rug for several minutes. You can also take your rug outside once it's been vacuumed and shake it out to make sure all the baking soda has been removed.
- 5). Wet a paper towel and rub the rug gently. Be sure to go in the direction of the grain of the rug if relevant. This will help protect the fibers. Rub the towel across the rug to gently clean it.
