How to Store Medicinal Herbs
- 1). Clean the herbs by running them under water. This will eliminate any dirt or dust that may have accumulated.
- 2). Place the herbs on a flat surface to dry off or pat them with a paper towel. You'll want to get rid of any excess water so that the herbs can begin the drying process.
- 3). Set up a mesh screen or cookie sheet in a dry, cool place away from sunlight. Lay the herbs out to dry further. This will take a few days--when the herbs break easily if you bend them, they are sufficiently dry. This step is necessary to prevent mold growth when the herbs are stored.
- 4). Gather or purchase any opaque-colored containers or bottles big enough to store the herbs. An opaque shade works best because it blocks out light, which shortens herbs' lifespan. Make sure the container's lid or cap fits very tightly. You could use glass jars, but make sure to keep them in a dark place once the herbs are inside.
- 5). Place the herbs inside the container and close it as tightly as possible. Store the container in a place that does not receive contact from sunlight, like in a medicine cabinet or a kitchen cabinet. The storage place should also be free of humidity and not subject to very hot or very cold temperatures.
