HOW IMPORTANT IS STRENGTH FOR VERTICAL JUMP?
There are a list of important factors that need to be in place in order to improve the ability to jump higher. The fact is this is true for everyone, from those who can barely get off the ground to those who are already over the 40" vertical category.
In other words, there is room for improvement no matter how high you jump right now. Are some people born with great hops? Most certainly, as we all know. The more critical question for them however is, can they train to jump even higher? Yes they can. And so can all of the rest of us as well.
Often in life, the more gifted tend to coast based upon their natural advantages. That works for a while but eventually everyone comes up against someone with the same or even better gifts.
On the other hand, those less naturally talented tend to learn early on that being smart and working hard can make up for a variety of disadvantages. Sort of the tortoise and the hare story.
Because of human nature, this works in the world of leapers as well. Anyone, naturally gifted or average, can dramatically improve their jumping skills and, the truth be told, because they have so much room for improvement, us average types can make spectacular advances.
But it takes a great work ethic as well as the right information to gain at least 10 inches in a vertical jump.
Without a comprehensive approach to jumping development, the progress that is made is helpful but nowhere near what could be accomplished when all aspects of proper training are included.

2. Teaching proper form is also critical. This is an area where gifted athletes are often weak and where the less gifted can make up a lot of ground. Like the basic fundamentals of any sport, it takes knowledge plus practice to develop proper form. It has zero to do with talent. This is an area, like strength development, where anyone and everyone can improve;
3. Working smarter, not harder is important. Understanding how to manipulate the recovery phase of training to advance results opens another path to better performance. Working smarter is not a function of talent, it is a matter of learning. Something every athlete can improve upon;
4. Learning and utilizing proper nutrition is another key factor. The jump furnace needs to be provided with the most useful fuel and knowing what that is and how to manage it will make a marked difference. This does not involve DNA. It requires a grocery store.
And there is a lot more that could be included with this brief list. But the point is this, it takes a comprehensive and well researched approach to improve hops by 10 inches or more, thereby evolving into a leaper.
