Professional Ways to Style Long Hair

    • Long hair can make you look unprofessional.talking with boss image by Laser from Fotolia.com

Although you may want to believe that the success of your career depends exclusively upon your skills and not your personal appearance, you probably know that this is not entirely true. Even if you know that your work is excellent, you still need to consider how your style is affecting the way others perceive you. Long hair can make you look too youthful, or worse, unkempt. If you prefer to wear your hair long, be sure to style it in a neat, professional manner.

    French Twist

    • A French twist is a type of bun that makes medium and long hair look elegant and put-together. This type of bun is always appropriate for the workplace, because it draws your hair away from your face and off your neck. It prevents your hair from getting messy throughout the day and does not require midday maintenance. In order to French twist your hair, carefully brush it back from your face toward the crown of your head. Remove all tangles and make sure that your hair is smooth. Gather your hair in a low ponytail halfway between your crown and your nape and twist it in two complete circles in a counterclockwise direction. Hold the base of the ponytail in your left hand, with the end in your right, pointed straight up. Gently bring the hair at the base of the ponytail up the twist to the crown of your head so that your twist now looks like a roll on the back of your head. With your right hand, fold the end of the ponytail down toward your nape and tuck it underneath the roll. Secure with a long hair clip and hair spray.

    Simple Bun

    • A simple bun, either at your crown or your nape, is a way to style your long hair that is appropriate even for the most conservative office. This style keeps your hair tidy all day, away from your face and off your neck. Although it may seem very plain, for many work environments this is preferable to any more elaborate or distracting hairstyle. Brush all of your hair back from your face toward either your crown or nape, depending upon how high you want your bun. Once it is smooth and free from tangles, gather your hair into a ponytail at the height you want your bun and secure it snugly with a hair elastic. Twist your hair in a counterclockwise direction from the base to the ends. Place your left hand at the base of the twist with your index and middle finger to the right of your hair. Wrap your ponytail all the way around your two fingers and put the end through the loop you just created to form a knot. Wrap the remainder of the ends around the knot you just created and secure your bun with another hair elastic. Spray your hair to keep it in place.

    Low Ponytail

    • If you wear your hair 2 or 3 inches past your shoulders, you can wear it in a neat, low ponytail. Brush your hair thoroughly so that it is smooth and tangle free. Part your hair at the side, and gather it at the nape of your neck. Secure the ponytail with a hair elastic and hair spray so that it does not get messy later. Note that this type of ponytail does not look professional if your hair is very long.
