How to Paint a Sand Texture

    • 1). Prime your walls before applying a sand texture paint. Paint primers will even out the sheen of the wall and also help to prevent future peeling and chipping of the sand paint finish.

    • 2). Choose a shade of latex paint and have a gallon of it mixed at the hardware store. While you are there, pick up a bag of silica sand. Silica sand comes in pre-measured bags for painting purpose---one bag for each gallon of paint.

    • 3). Open up the paint, working the blade of a flat head screwdriver under the lid. Add the silica sand to the paint according to label instructions. Combine the paint and sand by mixing with a paint stirrer.

    • 4). Pour some of the mixed sand paint into a paint tray. Apply the sand texture paint with a sponge paint roller, working in an even, up and down motion.

    • 5). Paint corners and cut into edges with a paintbrush. An angled paintbrush works best for painting around window and doorframes. Allow the walls to air dry.
