How do I Select a Slow Cooker?

    • 1). Write down the reasons for buying the slow cooker. Choose a serving capacity from three to nine or more people. Features include 1.5- or 2-quart capacity, which works well for two people, 4-quart for family meals and 7-quart capacity for a larger gathering. Size will be a factor in the decision. If you take meals to meetings and social events, a 6-quart unit with a locking lid and cord storage will be a good choice.

    • 2). Read about the manual and programmable features of a slow cooker. A busy cook may appreciate the programmable or digital unit, which enables her to schedule the number of hours the contents are to cook. The unit will switch to warm mode when the meal is cooked. The manual unit is set to a specific temperature, and the cook must reset the control from high to warm after the food is cooked.

    • 3). Select a slow cooker that has a removable stoneware interior, which makes cleanup much easier.

    • 4). Choose a manufacturer that you are familiar with and trust, or is highly recommended and approved by a consumer group.
