How to Cover Bay Windows
- 1). Measure the length and width of the bay window, using measuring tape. Measure from the top of the window curtain rod to either the bottom of the window ledge or to the floor, depending on which length you prefer.
- 2). Divide the width measurement in half to figure out the sizing for two curtain panels. Add 2 inches to the width measurement of each panel, and 4 inches to the length of each panel. This allows for seams and, hems, and a curtain rod pocket at the top.
- 3). Cut the fabric according to the measurements taken in Steps 1 and 2.
- 4). Sew a 1-inch hem on the two sides and bottom of each of the panels, using your sewing machine. Fold the fabric edges over 1/2 inch and iron them to create a crease. Fold over another 1/2 inch to create a finished and clean-looking hem. Pin the hems in place, then sew them.
- 5). Sew a 1/4-inch unfinished hem on the tops of the curtains. Fold the fabric hem over 1/4 inch once. Iron it, pin it in place, and sew. Fold over 2 1/2 inches to create a 2 1/2-inch curtain pocket. Iron the fabric to create a crease and insert pins to hold the pocket it in place. Sew a straight seam through the middle of the 1/4-inch hem and the layer of fabric it is pinned to, leaving the ends open. Repeat for the second panel.
- 6). Remove the curtain rod from its mounting hardware on the wall. Slip the new curtains over it. Replace the rod on the wall.
