Things at Home to Polish Silver
- A product that is surely in almost any house around the world, common toothpaste is suitable for polishing the silver items around your house. Coat your silver item with toothpaste, then run the item under warm water. This will produce a foam. Then use your toothbrush to scrub the cleaning foam into the crevices and hard-to-reach areas on your silver. Next, simply rinse the item to remove the paste, dry it and buff it with a soft cloth.
- For a bit more complex process, you can place a piece of regular aluminum foil into a nonaluminum pan and fill the pan with about 2 inches (5cm) of water. You can then add in a tablespoon of salt and a teaspoon of baking soda. Next, boil the mix and add your silver. Be sure to submerge your pieces completely. The salt and baking soda will work to remove smudges, smears, grease and dirt from the silver. You can then remove the silver and dry it off and buff it with a clean soft cloth.
- Using alkaline is another common way of cleaning your silver items, and it can be especially useful for silver jewelry. Alkaline substances include baking soda, wood ash and washing soda. You can mix the cleaner with water to produce a paste. Once you have a paste, apply it to a cloth and use the cloth to gently rub your jewelry. Once clean, you can then rinse and wipe with a clean soft cloth.
- In the case of items like silverware that has cheaper silver compositions, water can be enough to bring out the old shine of the item. You can use warm and sudsy water to submerge your silverware, and you should always make sure to dry the silverware completely. Afterward, wipe it with a dry and soft cloth to bring out the old polish of your silverware.
