How to Treat Cat Urine on Sub-Flooring
- 1). Pull up and remove the carpet and padding, or other type of flooring, from the area where the cat has urinated. You will have to replace the carpet after you treat the sub-floor to eliminate the urine, so discard the old carpet or flooring.
- 2). Clean away any dirt and debris from the wood or concrete area of sub-floor affected by the cat urine. You can brush or vacuum away the dust, dirt and debris. Wipe away any fresh urine, if still present, with a cleaning cloth.
- 3). Saturate the wood or concrete areas of the sub-floor that the urine has soaked into with an enzymatic cat urine cleaner. The enzymes in the cleaner will begin to neutralize the urine and eliminate the odor-causing particles in it. Leave the area dry for two weeks to fully eliminate the urine and any that has formed. If your cat has access to the area of exposed sub-floor during this time, place a sheet of plastic over the area to prevent re-marking. Repeat this procedure for older, set-in stains and odors.
- 4). Apply an oil-based primer and sealant to the wood and concrete affected by the urine on the sub-floor. Paint on the sealant with a brush and allow it to dry for two to three hours. Reapply the sealant two more times, allowing it to dry in between applications. Allow the sealant to fully dry overnight and check it the next day to ensure no urine stains have leaked through. If so, reapply the sealant two more times.
- 5). Spray the enzymatic pet solution over the sealant to ensure neutralize any possible urine that could remain. Allow it to dry overnight.
- 6). Apply a coat of polyurethane varnish over all of the areas for very bad stains. Though the sealant will contain and seal odors, the polyurethane varnish will give extra protection against any odors seeping through. It also will protect the wood from any possible urination problems in the future. Allow it to dry for 24 hours.
- 7). Replace the carpet and padding, or other flooring, and discourage pets from re-marking the area by placing aluminum foil over it for one month. Make sure to place a litter box nearby so your cat has an appropriate outlet in which to eliminate.
