How to Texturize a Ceiling

    • 1). Lay out tarps over the floor. Scrape the ceiling with a drywall knife, taking off any loose material and obstructions.

    • 2). Use the drywall knife to spread joint compound over any cracks, holes or other problem areas of the ceiling, so you're starting with as flat and smooth a surface as possible.

    • 3). Let the compound set according to the manufacturer's instructions. Sand the compound smooth with a drywall sander.

    • 4). Coat the ceiling with a layer of primer, first "cutting in" around the edges of the ceiling with a brush, and then rolling on the primer over the rest of the surface with a paint roller.

    • 5). Let the primer dry for six hours, and then apply a second coat. Let it dry overnight.

    • 6). Brush on textured paint along one edge of the ceiling. Roll on a few square feet of textured paint over the open ceiling area adjacent to that edge, running the roller along the edge to get the paint looking the same. Cover the whole ceiling, one section at a time.
