How to Make an Inexpensive Stage Backdrop
- 1). Purchase a sheet of muslin large enough to fit a backdrop stand or the back of a stage setting. Muslin is a woven cotton fabric that is cheap to purchase, easily dyed and drapes well.
- 2). Wash the muslin in a washing machine on a cool setting to remove any grease or dirt, which could affect the dyeing process.
- 3). Mix together the dye with some warm water to make a thick paste and add to a container filled with hot water. About 1 tablespoon of dye is required for every three gallons of water.
- 4). Add three cups of salt to the mixture and stir in using a paddle so that the dyeing liquid is completely mixed.
- 5). Submerge the muslin cloth in the tub and leave for 20 minutes stirring occasionally to ensure even dyeing.
- 6). Push the cloth to one side with the paddle and add a 1/3 cup of soda ash and stir in so it does not come into direct contact with the muslin. Add the soda ash gently over a period of 15 minutes.
- 7). Rinse the muslin with cool water to remove excess dye and then machine wash on a cool setting. Allow the muslin to drip dry on a washing line. This will leave a plain backdrop for a photography studio or a theater production.
- 8). Paint designs onto the backdrop to add details. Acrylic or latex paints are best for this and can be applied using brushes, sponges or any artistic material. A large area will be needed for this as the muslin will have to be laid out flat for painting. Allow to dry before attempting to move the fabric.
