How to Install Infared Patio Heaters

    • 1). Read all of the instructions included with your infrared heater. Observe safety warnings in the manual. Since home-installed infrared heaters can be of two types--hanging or bracket-mounted--determine how your heater will be mounted.

    • 2). Check the space you want heated compared to the output listed for the heater. Depending on the reflection used, the heater may function to direct the heat to a small spot, or it may diffuse it over a larger area. Choose your mounting location based on the heat profile of your lamp and the space you want to heat. For example, if you have a narrow profile lamp, you will want to point it directly at the table at which you will be sitting during the cold months. However if you have a diffuser lamp, you;d want to mount it in the general area that needs to be heated.

    • 3). Measure the distance between the mounting points or the hanging chains on your lamp. Mark the distance on the ceiling centered on a stud (locate it using a stud finder if the studs aren't exposed). Drill holes into the patio ceiling equidistant to the mounting holes. For a chain-mounted lamp, screw in the screw hooks, and then hook the chains over the hooks. For a bracket mount, use the included screws to screw the lamp bracket to the ceiling (read the instructions that came with the lamp for details on installing the bracket).

    • 4). Plug the extension cord into the cord for the heater. Note:some heaters come with long cords, only use an extension cord if necessary. Staple the cord to the ceiling. Center the staple gun over the cord against the ceiling, so that the legs of the staple will pass on either side of the cord. Do not pierce the cord with the staples. Work slowly and carefully to attach the cord to the ceiling and down the wall to the outlet.
