How to Seal a Beech Butcher Countertop

    • 1). Determine what kind of finish you need for sealing the butcher countertop. Over time, wood loses moisture, changes color and oxidizes. Choose your finish depending on what the countertop is used for. Use film forming, or coating finish, for butcher countertops that don't see too much wear and tear. Although film forming finishes will waterproof the wood, they wear and chip. Use penetrating oils for countertops that see a lot of action and are exposed to moisture often.

    • 2). Use a clean cloth or paint brush to spread finish over the surface of the wood. Allow the finish to soak for 24 hours, and repeat. Always follow manufacturer directions in regard to application and safety when using a sealant or finish.

    • 3). Wipe off any excess oil. Reapply the finish consistently every time the counter is washed or sanded. Reapplication will maintain the wood's moisture and beauty and protect it from stains and bacteria.
