What Is a Barrel Pedestal?

    Description

    • A pedestal for a rain barrel is a platform constructed of wood, concrete or brick. Wooden pedestals have legs that support a solid platform. These platforms are around 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The rain barrel sits directly on top of this stand.

    Support

    • A 55-gallon rain barrel can weigh as much as 450 pounds when full, according to North Cook County Soil and Water Conservation. This means the pedestal should allow for even distribution of the barrel's weight. Wooden pedestals should have wide legs on all sides. Additional support in the form of a cross beam may be needed in the center of the pedestal.

    Purpose

    • The purpose of a rain barrel pedestal is to elevate the barrel itself. This is so the spigot can be accessed more easily. Water pressure will also increase as the height of the barrel is raised, so the flow from the barrel itself will be faster.
