How to Transfer the Driver on a Rental Car

    • 1). Check the new driver's age and license. If they are under 25 years of age or have driving penalties on their license, some companies will charge more to let them drive, while other companies might not accept them as an additional driver at all. If in doubt, always check with your rental company beforehand, as different rental providers have different rules.

    • 2). Ask the company for their additional driver requirements. Some companies will accept spouses, employers and employees as additional drivers without any extra paperwork. However, other drivers, such as friends or traveling companions, might need to file certain forms before they can drive.

    • 3). Submit the driver's license details and the relevant company paperwork. If you are adding a driver when picking up the rental car, the company will ask the new driver to fill out an additional driver form. However, if you decide to switch drivers while on the road, you will need to fax or email a copy of the new driver's details to the rental office before they will be covered to drive. Companies like Avis only have the relevant documentation at hire centers, so you will need to travel there to fill out the paperwork before changing drivers.

    • 4). Pay any additional driver fees. These vary from company to company and will depend on the age of the driver. License holders under the age of 25 usually have to pay slightly more than older drivers. When in the United States, the cost of an additional driver might also vary from state to state. For example, Budget charges $13 per day for an extra driver in all states apart from California Nevada and New York. In California, there is no fee, in New York it is only $3, while in Nevada the cost is $10 per day.
