How to Record Vinyl to MP3
- 1). Connect your pre-amp or amplifier to your record player. Connect the pre-amp or amplifier to your sound card using the patch cable. Plug the standard RCA plug side (the larger one) into the record player and the other one to the "LINE IN" plug on your sound card.
- 2). Start your sound recording software. If you're using Windows, use the Sound Recorder software located in your accessories folder. If you have more specialized recording software, feel free to use it. You may need to use another program to convert the sound file you've recorded to MP3 format.
- 3). Adjust the volume on your amplifier or pre-amp to an acceptable level. If the volume is too low, the recording will not be sufficiently audible. You may need to experiment with the volume settings to get the best sound quality.
- 4). Play your LP and start recording the sound using your recording software. Once you have completed the recording, you can start editing the output.
- 5). Use sound editing software such as Audacity, Adobe SoundBooth or Steinberg WaveLab to break up the audio into separate tracks, convert it to MP3 if necessary and edit out any popping sounds or other issues with the recording. Converting the recording from a higher quality sound format to MP3 will reduce the file sizes while compromising the fidelity of the recording.
