How to Embroider a Blanket Stitch

    • 1). Place your fabric on the smaller inner hoop. Make a small fold in the fabric at the edge and position the outer hoop to catch the fabric between both hoops.

    • 2). Thread your needle with the floss. Do not make a knot on the end. Beginning on your right, push the needle up through the bottom portion of the fabric below the fold. Bring your needle diagonally up and over to your left and push it down through both layers of fabric. Catch the floss on the bottom in the stitch so it holds.

    • 3). Bring the point of your needle in line with your first stitch, usually about 1/4 inch away, and pull it through the bottom layer of fabric and through the loop made by your floss before you pull it all the way through (the thread should loop underneath the needle). Pull the floss all the way through the fabric so the loop tightens up around the point where you brought your needle up from the bottom of the fabric.

    • 4). Push your needle back down through the top fabric and both layers for the second stitch at a distance equal to the first stitch.

    • 5). Bring your needle back up and through the loop. Pull your floss through the fabric as before so the loop tightens around the stitch coming up from the bottom of your fabric. Continue making more blanket stitches until you finish the edge. When you get to the end, make sure your last stitch goes down to the bottom of the fabric. Cut the floss and thread the needle and floss through the last two stitches to catch it.
