How Are Lemons Stored?

    Counter Top

    • A large bowl of fresh lemons can add a decorative touch to any counter top or table. Lemons stored at room temperature will last for roughly one week, however. The lemons will continue to ripen at room temperature and may not even last a full week if the room is extremely warm or the lemons were not very fresh when purchased.

    Refrigerator

    • Place lemons in a crisper or fruit drawer in the refrigerator if you want to store them for up to four weeks. The cold temperature of the refrigerator slows down the ripening process, which preserves the lemons for a longer period of time. Bring chilled lemons back up to room temperature if you are juicing them, as it is easier and more productive to juice a non-chilled lemon.

    On the Tree

    • One storage option for freshly grown lemons is to leave them on the tree until you need to use them. This helps preserve the lemon in its natural habitat, thus extending the lifespan of the lemon.

    Meyer Lemons

    • One variety of lemons sold in stores, and used for baking and cooking, is known as the Meyer lemon. This hybrid lemon is actually a cross between a lemon and a mandarin orange or a lemon and an orange. Meyer lemons have a distinctive lemon flavor; however, they are not as tart and have a slightly milder flavor. Fresh Meyer lemons can be stored in a refrigerator for up to two weeks if the Meyer lemons were fresh when purchased.
