Many household cleaners contain ingredients that are toxic to pets, according to the ASPCA. Using natural, green products is not only good for the environment, but also for your pet's health since these products contain nontoxic ingredients that are safe to use around pets, when used according to the directions. These cleaners work just like other cleaners, using naturally sourced ingredients and essential oils, without potentially harmful chlorine bleaches and phenols. Purchase these products in your local pet supply store, health food store, or in the natural section of your grocery store. - Nature's Miracle has an entire line of cleaning products available for cats, dogs, birds, and small pets. These cleansers contain bacterial enzymes which digest the protein-based pet stains and odors naturally. The line has a variety of products, some for laundry, and some which absorb litter box odors. Use the cleaners to naturally remove urine and feces stains, clean bird cages and droppings, clean litter boxes, and clean small pet cages with no toxic effects. Their powder-based urine cleaner absorbs urine puddles on tile or wood, leaving only a powder to vacuum up. Their "Orange-Oxy Stain & Odor Remover" contains oxygen (non-chlorine) bleach as its primary ingredient, a nontoxic, hydrogen-peroxide based cleaner. All of their products biodegradable.
- Clean+Green has a full line of products available for pets of all sizes including those specific for dogs, cats, birds and small animals. Use their spray cleaners on any surface, including carpets, tile, furniture and even spray in the air to eliminate stains and odors. According to their website, their products are nontoxic, non-carcinogenic, noncorrosive, and nonflammable, containing no health or hazardous materials as listed in the U.S. Federal Regulations Toxic Substances Control Act. These cleaners encapsulate the source of odor after shearing its hydrocarbon chain and accelerates the biodegradability of the protein-based odor source. These products require no rinsing, as their byproducts are carbon and water.
- Two products that work to eliminate pet odors naturally, PureAyre and Zero Odor both use natural enzymes that are safe to use on all surfaces, including pet bedding, carpets, litter boxes, and cages. According to their website, PureAyre is made from food-grade ingredients of plant-derived enzymes, purified water and essential oils. PureAyre is also safe to use directly on pets. Zero Odor bonds with odor-causing pet molecules, bonding with them, and eliminating the odor causing properties. While it is nontoxic and biodegradable, it is not safe to spray directly on pets. Use these products to eliminate odors of urine and feces to prevent pets from remarking these areas.
- Clean pet stains and odors naturally by making some safe, all-natural cleaners at home. Use baking soda as a nontoxic way to scrub pet cages for small animals and birds. You can also use it to scrub litter boxes clean, mix with cat litter to deodorize it or be sprinkled on carpets to eliminate pet odors and vacuumed. Combine one part vinegar with two parts water to make an all-natural cleaner that you can add to an empty spray bottle to clean carpets, tile, cages, crates, wood and fabrics. For machine washable items, add 1/2 to 1 cup of vinegar to eliminate pets stains and odors or add 1/2 cup baking soda to deodorize them.
