Fundraising in College Athletics
- Sponsorships are one of the most significant sources of fundraising revenue for college sports teams. Sponsorships essentially involve allowing a company to associate itself with a team or player in the company's marketing activities. Common examples of college sports sponsorships include athletic apparel, footwear and sports nutrition organizations. Use of team logos or appearances by athletes are common in advertisements by sponsors.
- Various special events are also common in college sports fundraising. For example, a team might host a golf outing in which student-athletes are paired with individuals who purchase tickets to the event, thereby giving the donors a chance to meet and interact with donors. Other popular special events include private dinners or watching sports games from a sky box.
- Some college sports teams use raffles to raise money. Items are typically donated by supporters or can also be provided by the team. For example, a college football team might offer the jersey of a star player as a raffle prize. Raffles can also be held in conjunction with other fundraising events such as dinners or parties.
- Universities, the NCAA and other collegiate sports associations have various rules and restrictions on fundraising activities. For example, NCAA rules prohibit an institution or boosters from giving benefits to a student-athlete or the family of a student-athlete that are not generally available to members of the general student population. Some NCAA rules also prohibit participation in outside competitions. For example, a college basketball team would generally be prohibited from participating in a fundraising event that required it to play against other non-NCAA teams.
